Our School

“One of the things I like most about Synergy is that the school will put discussions of bias concerning race, gender, and sexual orientation on the table – dialogue is encouraged.”

Diversity

At Synergy there is a commitment to appreciating and honoring differences inside and outside the school community. We affirm the necessity of engaging in on-going work to create and sustain a socially just, equitable environment that actively works against racism and all forms of bias. During the late spring and summer of 2000, a racially diverse group of Synergy parents, teachers and board members, working closely with a consultant, developed “A Strategic Plan to Increase Racial Diversity and Enhance Community.” This plan guides and supports the entire Synergy community in achieving our goals in many ways, including: teacher selection and training, on-going curriculum development, and active recruitment and support of a diverse student population. Synergy has an active chapter of POCIS (People of Color in Independent Schools).

Currently 55% of the student body are students of color, including:

  • 15.0 % African American
  • 15.0 % Latino
  •  9.0 % Chinese
  •  5.0 % Indo Chinese
  •  4.0 % Filipino
  •  4.0 % Korean
  •  3.0 % Japanese

In addition, approximately 15% of Synergy students have LGBT heads of household. Families from Synergy also represent a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds, with 33% receiving financial aid. There are 18 adopted children, 24 children in LGBT families and, 12 single parent families.
