Library - 2nd Grade
The mission of the library program is to promote literacy, foster a love of reading, support the school’s curriculum, and create a place where inquisitive young minds feel welcome to explore. Second graders have a weekly library class, which includes storytelling, read-aloud, learning activities, and time to choose and borrow books.
Units of Study
- Review and expand on K-1 skills
- Understand difference between fact and opinion
- Learn and practice posing questions - the start of the research process
- Learn and practice searching for answers to questions
- Introduce concept of evaluating resources
- Create new version of a fairytale
- Differentiate different types of text (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, other genres)
- Connect literature to culture/country of origin with reference to maps, photographs, companion texts
- Visual literacy (compare and contrast different illustrations of the same story or concept)
- Poetry, Stories in rhyme
